Callistemon (crimson bottlebrush) is a shrub commonly found in swamps and near rivers. Those flowers produce sweet nectar which attracts numerous species of birds. The plant leaves give off a citrus like scent when crushed. Plant is an extremely drought tolerant plant once fully established. Young plants, however, need moderate watering. Water them in the spring and summer, only when the soil is dry. As with other plants, benefits from regular fertilization. A general purpose fertilizer in early spring is ideal for promoting flowering and healthy growth. Is a sun loving plant that requires full sun to produce the best flowers. Place it in a sunny spot, and it will showcase a vibrant display of beautiful blooms. Although not necessary, light pruning helps the plant to keep its shape. You can lightly prune at any time of the year, but more extensive pruning should only be done in late winter or early spring before flowering. If you want to shape, remove any dead or diseased wood and stray branches. Can adapt to various soil conditions, but it does not grow well in highly alkaline soils. It prefers loamy, moist, and well draining soils with a pH between 5.6-7.5.
